Best White Chocolate Rice Krispie Squares Recipe
I love a classic dessert, but nothing beats this homemade Rice Krispie squares recipe.

They’re chewy, crispy, and irresistibly sweet. Plus they come together with just a few pantry staples. This recipe uses crispy rice cereal, salted or unsalted butter, and fresh marshmallows for the perfect Rice Krispie treats every single time. You can also use mini marshmallows or regular marshmallows.
The great thing about making them yourself is that you control the ingredients and they don’t include all the added extras that help it stay on the shelves for longer.
And if you want to take them up a notch? Swirl in melted chocolate.

Tips for the Best Rice Krispie Squares
- Use fresh marshmallows. Old or stale ones won’t melt as smoothly and can make the bars dry.
- Melt butter slowly. Start over medium-low heat or medium heat to keep the marshmallow mixture soft and gooey. If you’re feeling fancy, try brown butter for a nutty depth of flavour.
- Don’t press too hard. When you press mixture into the prepared pan, use a buttered spatula, wax paper, or even butter wrappers to gently press into an even layer—this keeps your crispy treats soft instead of rock-hard.
- Storage matters. Keep them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, wrap individually in a piece of plastic wrap or a piece of parchment paper.
Equipment You’ll Need
- Large pot (or Dutch oven) to melt everything evenly. I use Our Place pans and love them.
- Large bowl (if mixing separately)
- Rubber spatula or silicone spatula for stirring
- Wooden spoon if you prefer old-school
- Baking dish or baking pan (9×13 or 9×9 works best)
- Cooking spray or greased spatula for spreading
- Baking sheet

Homemade Rice Krispie Squares Recipe
Ingredients
- 5 cups cups of Rice Krispies cereal (or original Rice Krispies)
- 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter (or browned butter for extra flavour)
- About 30 regular marshmallows
- Pinch of salt if using unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla or homemade vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Melt butter in a very large pot over medium-low heat until the butter melts completely. For deeper flavour, let it brown slightly until the milk solids turn golden
- Add the marshmallows and stir constantly over medium heat until fully melted
- Quickly fold in the crispy rice cereal until coated in the cereal mixture
- Transfer to a prepared pan (sprayed with cooking spray or lined with parchment paper)
- Press mixture gently with a buttered spatula into an even layer at the bottom of the pan
- Let cool at room temperature before slicing into squares
I added melted white chocolate on top of mine shown above.
If you wanted to do the same melt chocolate with 1 tsp of coconut oil in the microwave. Keep checking until melted and stir.

- Slice into Rice Krispie squares and enjoy immediately for that soft, gooey texture.
- For longer storage, wrap each piece in parchment or plastic wrap and keep in an airtight container.

Fun Variations to Try
- Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats → stir a couple tablespoons of peanut butter into the melted marshmallows.
- Chocolate Drizzle → melt some chocolate chips and drizzle across the top before slicing. (shown above)
- Fruity Pebbles → swap half the box of cereal for Fruity Pebbles for colorful, kid-friendly cereal treats.
- Holiday Twist → sprinkle in crushed candy canes at Christmas or add graham crackers + chocolate for s’mores squares.
- Reese’s Pieces → fold in Reese’s Pieces or peanut butter cups for a decadent variation.
